Since I am constantly trying to improve the way interesting Twitter users can be found and qualified, I decided some weeks ago to see who the people in the Dutch Twop-1000 were following themselves. Because there are some minor weaknesses in the algoritmns that create the Twop-1000, I figured that the most experienced and widely followed Tweeters should be able to make interesting decisions about who they follow themselves. The Twop-1000 was a good starting point for this exercise, because I am convinced that the Twop-1000 captures at least 95% of the 1000 most interesting Tweeters in the French language.
I took the population of Tweeters that I track for the French language Twop-1000, which are at this moment all tweeters with more than 375 followers, and checked who they followed in the same population of most followed Tweeters. As with the Dutch list, the French list gave some interesting insights. It showed that number 1 in the list, CanadiensMTL is hardly followed by the Twop-1000, while MichelleBlanc, thaunay and frenchweb move from lower positions all the way to the top.
Another interesting point I found was that #1, pressecitron, who is #2 in the Twop-1000 is followed by only 43% of the Twop-1000. My assumption would have been that a much higher percentage of tweeters would follow the top tweeters.
Anyway, given that there is some criticism on the way the Twop-1000 is calculated, I think this list gives a nice view on top Tweeters from a different angle. An angle however that can also be easily criticed. By checking positions in both lists maybe a more accurate picture arises of where a tweeter should be ranked. Keep in mind however that the reason I made a list of 1000 tweeters, was not because I think position is so important, but because I wanted to find and show a big selection of interesting tweeters. I hope you enjoy the list here.
